Poland - General Information
Poland is an Eastern European country on the Baltic Sea and famous for its medieval architecture and Jewish Heritage. The Capital of Poland is Warsaw and it stands on the Vistula River in east central Poland. It is a sprawling city with many varied architectural styles. You can see everything from Gothic churches, neo-classical palaces to Soviet era blocks and modern skyscrapers. There are an estimated 38.53 million people living in Poland and Warsaw is considered to be the cultural hub. After total destruction during WWII, Warsaw's old town was faithfully restored to its pre-war appearance.
There are many things to do while in Poland outside Warsaw. A few things you could check out would be the Wawel Castle which is a 14th century castle in the city of Krakow, go through a Renaissance trading post in Rynek Glowney, or tour the Wieliczka Salt Mine tunnels.
Poland has a very rich cuisine that is influenced greatly by many of the surrounding Slavic countries. It is rich in meats, including pork, chicken and beef depending on what region of Poland you're in. They use lots of winter vegetables and herbs in their meals; cabbage can be found in many dishes. Breaded Pork cutlets are a very traditional representation of a meal with boiled potatoes and cabbage stew or Polish sausages. Another very famous dish from the area is Pierogi, these are dumplings filled with either something savory or sweet and then cooked in boiling water.
The weather in Poland is fairly unpredictable due to the fact that it lies in a moderate zone with mixed continental and oceanic climate influences. However, it is noted that the best time to visit and go sightseeing is probably going to be spring, from late April through June. If you are coming for winter sports, then the best time to visit would be between December and February.
