Slovenia - General Information
Slovenia is a country in Central Europe bordering countries are Croatia, Austria, Italy and Hungary. The capital city is Ljubljana and is also the largest city in Slovenia. It is considered to be one of the greenest and most livable capital cities in Europe. It is known for its mountains, outdoor recreation and ski resorts.
Ljubljana has many museums including the National Museum of Slovenia; cafés line the streets the curve along the Ljubljanica River which divides the city into its commercial hub and its Old Town. Ljublijana was previously the site of the Roman city of Emona during the time of the Roman Empire. Each year Ljubljana hosts an Emona themed exhibit to celebrate their history. In Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps, they offer skiing, hiking, and rafting along the Soca River.
The surrounding countries heavily influence Slovenian cuisine. You will find traditional Italian foods such as pizza, risotto, gnocchi as well as dishes you might recognize as more of a Hungarian tradition, such as goulash. Slovenia has such a wide variety of cuisine, there are about 40 different regional cuisines; meals are so delicious that it is said people from Austria come to Slovenia just for the food! They are also famous for their soups and at this time there are about 100 traditional Slovenian soups. But even more important, are the Slovenian desserts. The traditional desserts include strudels or pancakes which are often filled with apples, sliced, fresh or mashed. A great way to finish any meal.
The weather in Slovenia is similar to many of the European continental areas with warm dry summers and fairly cold winters. In general, May through October would be the best time to visit, but if you are coming for winter recreation then you should come December through March.
